How to write goals for 2018

January 5, 2018 By Chevron Island Physio

January is all about New Year’s resolutions and what you can do to get what you want out of life, love, career etc. Although we should be focusing on them all year round it’s a good chance to start fresh and think about what it is you want. Many resolutions that are made set us up for failure as they are not clear or achievable. It’s also helpful to have it written down and placed in a spot that is visible to you to keep you on track (fridge, beside your bed etc). Often by February our New Year Goals have already fallen by the way side!

I found these questions quite interesting and thought provoking. A good place to start anyway!

Introducing Carol our Yoga Instructor!

November 15, 2017 By Chevron Island Physio

Carol is our newest Yoga teacher here at Chevron Island Physio’s Soul Space. Our classes are kept to a maximum of 7 people creating an intimate and personalsied class maximising benefits and minimising injury. Carol is a positive and vibrant instructor who we feel lucky to have teaching with us.

Here’s a bit more about Carol:

QUESTION 1: Why did I become a yoga teacher?

My primary goal of completing a teacher training course was to understand – who, what, where, why and how of yoga? Who are yogis (or past yogi’s)? What was the background/purpose of yoga? Where did it originate? Why did I feel the way I did after doing yoga? And how do I fit yoga into my daily lifestyle? I knew that I gained more from doing yoga and seemed like a natural progression to teach others. I hope that through guiding others to the practice of yoga, that they are able to gain more (not just the physical aspects) – positive vibes, a positive mind and a positive life.

Question 2: How does yoga influence my normal day-to-day life?

For three years my husband and I lived in Hua Hin Thailand and have recently returned back home to the Gold Coast. Yoga has guided my transition back to Australia and continues to support a positive mindset for this transition. Change can be challenging yet yoga has taught me to remain patient, persist and endure. Life is ever changing and learning to apply the philosophy of yoga to balance work and life, is invaluable.

Question 3: Yoga can be intimidating for new clients. What advice may assist with new students?

Yes, yoga can be intimidating – at first, however when you experience the essence of the energy from practitioners and the asana (posture) practice, you will understand that we are all on our own journey. We have all been beginners…we all are at different levels, with different bodies and different energy level (even from day to day). Yoga is about the transformation of oneself (the connection of the body, mind and spirit) and you will gain so much more by regularly practicing yoga.

Question 4: What can people expect to see or notice in themselves when they become regular in their yoga practice?

For me, practicing yoga regularly is not only a physiological need but also a psychological need. My mind is peaceful, calm and balanced to the modern elements of life. My husband is acutely aware, if I have not practices yoga! My whole well-being is different and I am not my true self. Benefits from yoga isn’t just about the physical elements, for me, its about the mental and spiritual elements that I can no longer live without, which you too can enjoy!

Question 5: Do I have a favourite posture?

I really don’t have a posture that I feel strongly about. What I really enjoy is the meditative feeling when I am in the ‘zone’ whilst doing my practice. When my body feels great, my breath is long and deep and the ‘heightened’ internal consciousness appears. Its the feeling, the calmness and the serenity that I gain from doing regular practice, which keeps me committed to getting on my mat.

Question 6: What do you need to do yoga?

To prepare for yoga practice, I would recommend drinking water (1 glass – 2 hours before hand) and abstain from heavy foods prior to your yoga session. It doesn’t matter where you’re starting from or at what age you begin – movement and yoga can help.

Question 7: What style of yoga do I teach?

Whilst I have gained my 500hr RTY (Registered with the US and Australia) accreditation in Rishikeshi India for Hatha Yoga, Astanga yoga and Vinyasa/Astanga modified yoga, I have adapted my sessions to cater for various clients specific needs. I have been fortunate to attended numerous workshops designed for healing, health and rejuvenation towards improving my teaching methods to guide practitioners safely, such as the ability to use props to assist with modifications of specific posture. With these modifications you will gain greater flexibility, balance and overall body strength.

RESTORATIVE YOGA for peace and contentment

March 31, 2017 By Chevron Island Physio

RESTORATIVE YOGA brings a deep state of peace and contentment.

Nowadays in this stressful world we have the false idea that more is always better. However this constant over stimulation only puts our bodies into a state of emergency (fight – or – flight mode), where the mind and body pay the price. This leads to us feeling frazzled and overwhelmed creating the perfect environment for chronic stress diseases such as; depression,  anxiety, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, upper respiratory infections, pain of any kind, sleep problems, digestive problems, skin conditions, weight problems, reproductive issues and concentration and memory problems.

There is a way to avoid these problems by learning how to recognize the signs and symptoms of chronic stress and take steps to reduce its harmful effects. When you find yourself in this situation it’s time to stop and take actions to bring your nervous system back into balance. This is where RESTORATIVE YOGA can play an important role in life. RESTORATIVE YOGA is all about learning about your body with an emphasis on true rest, allowing the body and mind to heal itself.

Most of the RESTORATIVE YOGA practice is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Lyengar and the idea behind it is to create a completely supportive environment for total relaxation where you can just be. The main philosophy is achieving mental, emotional and deep physical relaxation with the aid of props. The more fully your body is supported, the deeper your sense of relaxation and surrender will be. The props should be arranged in a way that allows you to simply be, rather than stretch or feel any physical sensations.  The key is to take the time to get comfortable on your prop and make any necessary adjustments before you settle into the hold. Each pose is held for at least 5 minutes as the longer you hold the pose more layers of tension are released cleansing your system. The poses are manly light twists, seated forward folds and gentle backbends associated with long, deep and slow breaths, resulting in deep relaxation.

In addition, It’s claimed that regular RESTORATIVE YOGA practice can decrease the stress hormone cortisol, lower heart rate, reduce joint aches, tense muscles and alleviate the occurrence of depression and fatigue enhancing the quality of life.

In conclusion, if you have been feeling stressed and overwhelmed, it seems that a slow and soothing RESTORATIVE YOGA practice it is exactly what you need!  Soul Space offers two classes during the week where you are more than welcome to come along and just be, allowing yourself to gently shift into a deep state of peace and contentment.

Hope see you on the mat soon!

Namaste!

YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE!

November 2, 2016 By Chevron Island Physio

– Can I practice Yoga if I’m not flexible?
– I’m overweight… Can I do Yoga?
– I’m too old for it! I don’t know if I can make it!

These are the types of the questions or “excuses” that I’ve heard since I began teaching yoga. There are a lot of misconceptions, especially due to the propagation of social media that often associate fit, skinny and beautiful people with Yoga. This creates a false stereotype that discourages “normal’ people to try and get the benefits of regular Yoga practice.

For this reason, I strongly affirm that YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE!! You do not need to be strong, fit and flexible or to be able to do handstands and crazy twists to practice Yoga. What you need when practicing Yoga is to be present and doing your best. The main focus of yoga is to reconnect you to the deepest part of YOU and that is why everyone can do it. It’s adaptable to every shape, size, gender and age – you just need to listen to your body and respect your limits.

Unlike stretching or fitness, yoga is more than just physical postures. Yoga is unique and when practicing Yoga we connect the mind, body and breath helping us direct our attention inward. Through this process of inward attention, we learn to recognize our habitual thought patterns without labeling them, judging them, or trying to change them. We become more aware of our experiences from moment to moment. The awareness that we cultivate is what makes yoga a practice, rather than a task or a goal to be completed.

Yoga practice will help you to improve your fitness level, flexibility, strength, coordination, cardiovascular health, physical confidence and overall well-being.
At Soul Space you can find a class to suit your needs. If you are new to yoga, look for Restorative or Beginner’s Yoga. These classes will introduce you to the poses and sequences while improving strength and flexibility. If you have previous experience try our General Yoga or Yoga Flow classes to get a more dynamic and challenging session. Senior’s Yoga is a class designed to fulfill the needs of people over 60 years old by including light stretching and movement to create relaxation in the body and mind.

In essence, Yoga is non-competitive life journey that improves your fitness level and self-awareness. The more you get to know yourself on the mat, the easier it is to be your authentic self in the world.

If you want to find out more about Yoga and experience the beauty of this delightful Philosophy, you are more than welcome to join me on mat. We have several classes during the week and it will be easy to find a class and time the suits you best. Check out our timetable here: https://www.chevronislandphysio.com.au/timetable/

The only regret you will have is not having started earlier!

Namaste! (The Divine in ME honors the Divine in YOU).

The benefits of Yoga

July 28, 2016 By Chevron Island Physio

The benefits of yoga are both instant and long lasting. Yoga can change your physical and mental capacity quickly, while preparing the mind and body for long-term health.

Yoga is for everyone
Our Yoga classes are small and intimate (7 max per class) allowing us to provide different levels and modifications. We also offer beginners and general yoga to suit everyone’s requirements. Whether you are after a bit of stretching and relaxation or a more powerful, strength workout, Yoga is for you!

Yoga encourages overall health and wellness
The practice of yoga allows students to be still in a world consumed with chaos. Yoga’s deep breathing and meditation practices help foster an inner shift from to-do lists, kids and spouse’s needs, financial concerns and relational struggles to something a little bit bigger than the issues you face. Yoga helps relieve stress and unclutter the mind, and helps you get more focused.

Strength training and flexibility
Yoga’s focus on strength training and flexibility is an incredible benefit to your body. The postures are meant to strengthen your body from the inside-out, so you don’t just look good, you feel good too. Each of the yoga poses is built to reinforce the muscles around the spine, the very center of your body, which is the core from which everything else operates. When the core is working properly, posture is improved, thus alleviating back, shoulder and neck pain.
The digestive system gets back on track when the stretching in yoga is coupled with a healthy, organic diet, which can relieve constipation, irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) and acid reflux. Another one of the benefits of yoga is that stretching and holding of postures also causes muscles to lengthen, which gives the body a longer, leaner look.

Benefits of Yoga
Here’s a list of some of the most beneficial aspects of yoga:
• It increases endurance, strength and flexibility.
• Mental endurance and physical stamina are tested through holding postures for extended breaths.
• Arm and shoulder strength is multiplied as you use your own body weight for resistance.
• Lats and other back muscles begin to support the spine better than before.
• Abdominals and obliques are refined and sharpened through building core muscles.
• Poor and average posture begins to correct itself over time.
• Hip flexors are stretched and rebuilt.
• Glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves are tightened and lengthened where they need to be.

Yoga will benefit in the way that you need it most. If your body needs stretching and relaxation, this is what you will get out of yoga. If you feel your mind just needs to rest and de-stress then this is what you will get out of yoga. Give it a try and feel the benefits for yourself – it really is an amazing activity to be involved in.
