BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

February 11, 2015 By Chevron Island Physio

There are many benefits of performing gentle Yoga during and post pregnancy. During this special time in a woman’s life it is important to feel relaxed and confident while building and maintaining strength and fitness. Our Pre-natal Yoga teacher Lee has specialized training in the field and will ensure you are well looked after during her classes.

Some of the benefits include:

• Promotes relaxation and stress management
Awareness and control of breath is an effective tool during pregnancy to help calm and reduce anxiety. It is also a wonderful technique to help with pain management, allowing the woman to focus and relax during labour.

• Improves general fitness (stamina) and health for pregnancy and birth
The calming practices are beneficial for the nervous and hormonal systems whilst the more energising and strengthening practices are great for the cardiovascular system.

• Promotes emotional well being
It enhances the woman’s enjoyment of the journey of pregnancy as a special and sacred time and encourages her to honour herself and her baby within whilst cultivating the benefits of self-love and nurturing.

• Increases strength, flexibility and agility
The woman is in the best possible shape for the challenges of labour (particularly for an Active Birth approach) and beyond and her body is more able to recover quickly after bub has arrived.

• Deep toning of the birth muscles
This helps the woman to ‘birth lightly’ and again will facilitate a speedy Postnatal recovery (e.g. reduce or prevent stress incontinence/prolapse and aid in the recovery of stitches).

• Improves overall circulation
And can help with fluid retention reducing swelling in the ankles and legs.

• Can reduce or alleviate back problems common in pregnancy

The strength and flexibility focus of the postures can help ease back, neck, and hip pain which is often caused by the increasing stress on the spinal nerves by the growing weight of the baby and also the increase in breast size.

• Improves posture
Back pain eases when posture is more consciously aligned.

• Alleviates/prevents the common aches and pains of pregnancy

Can ease heartburn, oedema (fluid retention), muscle cramps, constipation etc. helping the woman to enjoy a more comfortable pregnancy.

• Improves balance and co-ordination
Enhances grace.

• Helps a woman birth consciously and powerfully
Yoga is attention. Conscious relaxation helps the mother to stay present, relax and revive her energies. Breaking the ‘fear tension’ cycle, even when things get very challenging and demanding, she is able to use her yoga awareness and tools to stay calm and grounded which will have a positive effect on the baby.

• Yoga can empower women
Yoga helps her to develop the mental and physical strength needed in preparation for the challenges ahead and to face them with courage and equanimity.

Our classes are small and intimate with only 3-4 people per class ensuring you receive maximum attention and providing a personal experience for you and your growing bub.

Pilates for Pregnancy

February 2, 2015 By Chevron Island Physio

Many women find Pilates to be one of best exercises for both during and after their pregnancy. One of the top reasons Pilates and pregnancy go together so well is that Pilates is great at building core strength. Your stomach and pelvic floor muscles are put under increasing strain as your baby grows. At the same time, the hormone relaxin is making the tough tissues that connect your bones (ligaments) more pliable. Your ligaments are likely to stretch more than usual and if you overload them you may injure yourself.

Stretched and weakened stomach muscles can effect your back and pelvis, causing pain. Weakened pelvic floor muscles may also affect your ability to control your bladder causing you to leak small amounts of urine when you cough or sneeze. Pilates exercises activate the deepest layer of your tummy muscles and your pelvic floor muscles, necessary for stabilising your back and pelvis and for controlling your bladder. Many Pilates exercises are performed on your hands and knees, which is an ideal position for pregnancy. Adopting this position can take some of the strain off your back and pelvis and towards the end of your pregnancy may help to get your baby into the right position for birth. If your abdominals, back, and pelvic floor muscles are strong, they will help to support you back and pelvis and control your bladder allowing for a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery.

Pilates is also famous for helping new mums get their figures back after baby is born!

Chevron Island Physio offers classes for both pre and post natal women as well as ‘mums and bubs’ Pilates sessions which allow you to bring your little one along with you while you exercise. These classes help expecting mothers in their first, second and third trimesters to develop awareness of their pelvic floor and strengthen and support their lower back. The classes also focus on shoulder stability and upper extremity strength, as well as general fitness and flexibility.
You will need clearance from your Doctor prior to commencing these classes. We also ask that you book in for an Initial Pregnancy Pilates consultation with one of our Physiotherapists prior to attending any classes. Call 5504 7000 to find out more.
