AGEING WELL

July 5, 2017 By Chevron Island Physio

AGEING WELL

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.”

-George Bernard Shaw

At Chevron Island Physio we are committed to helping people maintain active, healthy and independent lifestyles. We have many programs suited to elderly clients including:

Balance and Falls Prevention Exercise Class

As we age, we often develop a feeling of general stiffness in the body, a loss of balance and a fear and then a real risk of falls. 40% of adults over the age of 65 years fall each year.

Falls can result in:
• Decreased confidence to participate in everyday activities
• Restricted lifestyle, reduced social and recreational activities
• Decreased physical capabilities and loss of muscle strength and endurance, making everyday activities harder
• Loss of independence
• Injury and illness
• More falls

Our Balance and Falls Prevention Classes are run by experienced Physiotherapists with the aim of strengthening and stabilizing in a 50-minute exercise based class. The sessions also focus on education, including home programs for each participant. Each person’s program is developed specifically for them based on their needs and preferences, ensuring all ages and levels are catered for. We also include a little bit of fun and socializing!

Signs you would benefit from Balance and Falls Prevention Class:
• Do you feel unsteady on your feet?
• Do you suffer from dizziness or vertigo?
• Have you recently had a fall or are afraid of falling?
• Or are you concerned for a loved one?
If you answered Yes to any of the above you need to come and try a class today!

How do I book an appointment?

We require an Initial one on one assessment with a Physiotherapist before proceeding into classes. This allows us to do some baseline testing, find out any relevant history and injuries, set goals and enable us to develop a program specific to each individual.

From there you can go into our small group classes (maximum 8 per class) run by Physiotherapists. Bookings essential.

Private Health Fund Rebates may apply if you have extras cover.

Reformer Pilates

Our reformer Pilates is perfect for older adults as it low impact and easy on the joints.

With its focus on controlled breathing and quality of movement-not quantity of repetitions- Pilates is one of the best ways for older adults to stay healthy while reducing risk of injury.

Pilates helps with a variety of age-related ailments including arthritis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, back pain and may even contribute to delayed onset of mental health issues such as Alzheimers.  Pilates is also a great tool for rehab from surgical procedures like hip replacement or knee surgery.

Other benefits include improving strength, flexibility, balance, energy and quality of life with a focus on maintaining independence.

Our classes are run by Physiotherapists who will tailor an individualised program based on your specific needs, injuries and goals. You will be monitored closely throughout the class to reduce risk of injury and maximise benefits. Our classes are perfect for any age or fitness level. Even if you have never exercised a day in your life you will benefit from Pilates!

We hope to see you in a class soon.

A one on one Initial Consultation is required before proceeding into group classes.

Classes are claimable via private health with extras cover.

Senior’s Yoga

Seniors, who often struggle with pain, joint stress, imbalance, osteoarthritis, and other physical limitations, can benefit from incorporating a yoga practice into their daily routine.

Yoga in your older years can improve balance, stability, flexibility, joint health and respiration as well as reduce high blood pressure and anxiety and promote awareness and mindfulness.

Our Senior’s Yoga is a gentle class designed to create relaxation in the body and mind with some light stretching and movement to get the blood flowing.

Our classes are limited to 5 participants creating an intimate and safe environment where each person is catered for individually. Our instructors are caring and gentle and will ensure you have a wonderful experience.

Bookings essential.

Yoga may be claimable via private health depending on your cover. Contact your individual fund to find out information specific to you.
