July 9, 2018 By Chevron Island Physio

ARE YOU STIFF AND SORE?

DID YOU KNOW THAT WE OFFER MAINTENANCE AND WELLBEING PROGRAMS THAT CAN BE DONE IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME FOR AS LITTLE AS $20?

Our Physiotherapist Sally Buratowski has 23 years’ experience and has treated a wide range of patients from 1-104 years of age. We live in an ageing population, and many of us may live to be over 100 years old which means that we may need to keep working until we’re 75 or 80! Specific DAILY exercises should be included into everyone’s routine to help combat this.

To aid people with these exercises, Sally has developed a range of whole body maintenance and wellbeing programs for each area of the body which include specific exercises to improve balance, mobility, flexibility, stability and strength. She has also developed a program for over 50s, over 60s, children with growing pains, scoliosis and middle back pain and people with chest conditions such as asthma and pneumonia.

SUFFERING ARTHRITIS AND BEING PAINFREE

April 26, 2016 By Chevron Island Physio

Is it possible to remain pain free if I have arthritis and what type of exercises are safe to do?

Ageing is an inevitable part of life. We can’t stop it but we can attempt to slow it down so that we can enjoy every minute of it! As we get older, the space between our joints becomes narrowed and extra bony growths called osteophytes form. This is what we call arthritis. Most people over the age of 30 will have some degree of arthritis, but that does not mean that they have to be in pain. Just like a bike with a rusty chain-  if you maintain it each day and keep the chain well oiled, it will keep working for many more years to come and give you a much smoother ride!

The joints in our body work in much the same way. If we keep our joints well oiled, they will work for years without giving us too many problems. This can be achieved by doing simple mobility exercises every day. Conversely, taking arthritic medications on their own without doing exercise is like sticking oil on the chain of a bike and not spinning the wheels around. It will certainly work a little better but it won’t make a huge difference. This is why it is important for us to be doing daily mobility exercises. As nearly everyone over the age of 30 will have some degree of arthritis on xray, it is important to start these exercises sooner rather than later.

We are born with these amazing bodies but no one ever teaches us how to use them properly. As an example, around the age of 12 months, we begin to walk but no one actually teaches us. We mimic what we see our parents and adults around us doing. So if we begin to pick up bad habits along the way and don’t walk correctly, we can end up with earlier degeneration in our hip and knee joints and increased likelihood of joint replacement surgeries in later life.

Physiofusion have specifically developed two programs for the over 50s and over 60s that focus on improving posture, balance, mobility, flexibility, stability and strength in every area of the body. These maintenance and well-being programs are suitable for the whole family from 8 to 108 years of age. They include some simple tips for walking, sitting and standing more efficiently and  are also beneficial for teenagers suffering from growing pains or sporting injuries.

For a free one month trial of all 12 physiofusion programs for the whole family, go to www.physiofusion.com.au, click on the COUPONS tab and enter the code TrialPhysio. Programs can also be purchased as a DVD, USB, download or via an online subscription for as little as $2.50/wk.

Get back to doing the things that you love and be pain and injury free today!

DO YOUR JOINTS ACHE MORE IN WINTER?

June 25, 2014 By Chevron Island Physio

Arthritis is a condition where the space between your joints becomes narrowed and extra boney growths called osteophytes form. Most people over the age of 30 will have some degree of degeneration or arthritis in their joints but the good news is, that just like a bike with a rusty chain, if you maintain your joints and keep them well-oiled, they will work for years and years without giving you too much trouble.
As we are living longer these days and having to work until later in life, it is imperative that we take good care of our joints. Ideally, everyone over the age of 30 should be doing daily mobility and strengthening exercises to keep their bodies moving effectively, especially in the colder winter months when everything tends to stiffen up.
You can minimize damage to your joints by taking care with lifting, watching your weight, avoiding jerky/sudden movements, improving your posture, respecting your pain, avoiding over-stressing your joints, not overdoing activity and using splints or walking aids when required.
Our Physiotherapists are highly qualified in the assessment and treatment of arthritis and can prescribe specific exercises to improve your posture, mobility, strength and flexibility. They can also perform specific techniques to relieve your pain, mobilize your joints, massage your muscles and provide you with tailor-made exercises to improve your overall function.
Exercises can help by maintaining or increasing mobility, improving joint lubrication and nutrition, restoring muscle balance, improving circulation, improving strength and stability and improving poor posture. However, it is important that these exercises are individually prescribed by a Physiotherapist to suit your condition.
There is no need to get a referral from a doctor to see one of our Physiotherapists unless you are claiming through Medicare, Work cover, Veteran’s Affairs or third party insurance. You may be eligible for a rebate through your private health fund if you have Physiotherapy extras cover, leaving little to no out of pocket expense.

Physiotherapy and Arthritis

November 12, 2012 By Chevron Island Physio

One of the most common forms of arthritis is osteoarthritis. It damages your joints through wear and tear. It can be painful and depressing. There is not cure, but there are ways of managing the condition and making life easier. Physiotherapy is an important part of that management.

HOW DOES OSTEOARTHRITIS AFFECT PEOPLE?

Most people develop some degree of osteoarthritis especially as they get older. The changes are permanent and exist even when there are no symptoms. Osteoarthritis affects people in varying degrees. Some people may be symptom-free or suffer only mild or intermittent pain provoked by episodes of increased use or minor trauma. For some people symptoms can be disabling and when it involves the larger joints of the body such as the hip or the knee, the severity of the problem may require surgical treatment.

Wear and tear of our joints may occur due to aging, injury, prolonged poor posture, over use of joints, or excess weight.

DIAGNOSIS

Osteoarthritis is one of 150 different forms of arthritis for which there are different treatments. Your general medical practitioner can make a diagnosis. Treatment may include physiotherapy and/or anti-inflammatory medication.

Other treatment methods may include gentle passive movement, heat, electrical treatments, muscle stimulation, aquatic physiotherapy (hydrotherapy), splints and advice on preventing further joint damage through self management.

Specific exercise prescription is also a proven therapy in the management of arthritis.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS

  • Recurring pain or tenderness in a joint.
  • Stiffness, particularly early morning stiffness.
  • Swelling in a joint.
  • Obvious redness or heat in a joint.
  • Inability to move a joint.

HOW PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN HELP

Physiotherapists are highly qualified in the assessment and treatment of the effects of osteoarthritis. Physiotherapy can:

  • Reduce pain.
  • Improve movement and posture.
  • Strengthen muscles.
  • Improve independent function.
  • Assess and treat bio mechanical problems that may exacerbate the pain and loss of function.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOURSELF:

  • Always respect pain.
  • Avoid over-stressing joints.
  • Avoid jerky/sudden movements.
  • Don’t overload joints.
  • Take care with lifting.
  • Watch your weight.
  • Improve your body alignment to take stress off any arthritic joints.
  • Use splints or walking aids as advised.
  • Don’t overdo activity or exercises.

EXERCISES – HOW DO THEY HELP?

Exercises for people with osteoarthritis should be individually prescribed. Your physiotherapist can devise a programme of exercises to suit your condition. As a general rule remember if any exercise hurts then DON’T DO IT!

Recent physiotherapy research has consistently shown exercise to be effective in management of osteoarthritis of the knee.

EXERCISES HELP BY:

  • Maintaining or increasing movement.
  • Improving joint lubrication and nutrition.
  • Restoring muscle balance.
  • Improving circulation.
  • Improving strength and stability.
  • Improving poor posture.

Don’t forget to maintain your general fitness level – this helps you feel better and retain your healthy joints. Gentle regular exercises such as swimming, exercising in water (hydrotherapy), walking or cycling are recommended.

REST

Whilst rest is an important part of managing your osteoarthritis, it is usually balanced with exercises and activity. In particular rest is required when joints are HOT, SWOLLEN OR PAINFUL.

Your physiotherapist will go through these things in greater detail with you on your initial consultation.
