RESTORATIVE YOGA brings a deep state of peace and contentment.
Nowadays in this stressful world we have the false idea that more is always better. However this constant over stimulation only puts our bodies into a state of emergency (fight – or – flight mode), where the mind and body pay the price. This leads to us feeling frazzled and overwhelmed creating the perfect environment for chronic stress diseases such as; depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, upper respiratory infections, pain of any kind, sleep problems, digestive problems, skin conditions, weight problems, reproductive issues and concentration and memory problems.
There is a way to avoid these problems by learning how to recognize the signs and symptoms of chronic stress and take steps to reduce its harmful effects. When you find yourself in this situation it’s time to stop and take actions to bring your nervous system back into balance. This is where RESTORATIVE YOGA can play an important role in life. RESTORATIVE YOGA is all about learning about your body with an emphasis on true rest, allowing the body and mind to heal itself.
Most of the RESTORATIVE YOGA practice is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Lyengar and the idea behind it is to create a completely supportive environment for total relaxation where you can just be. The main philosophy is achieving mental, emotional and deep physical relaxation with the aid of props. The more fully your body is supported, the deeper your sense of relaxation and surrender will be. The props should be arranged in a way that allows you to simply be, rather than stretch or feel any physical sensations. The key is to take the time to get comfortable on your prop and make any necessary adjustments before you settle into the hold. Each pose is held for at least 5 minutes as the longer you hold the pose more layers of tension are released cleansing your system. The poses are manly light twists, seated forward folds and gentle backbends associated with long, deep and slow breaths, resulting in deep relaxation.
In addition, It’s claimed that regular RESTORATIVE YOGA practice can decrease the stress hormone cortisol, lower heart rate, reduce joint aches, tense muscles and alleviate the occurrence of depression and fatigue enhancing the quality of life.
In conclusion, if you have been feeling stressed and overwhelmed, it seems that a slow and soothing RESTORATIVE YOGA practice it is exactly what you need!
