PREGNANCY PILATES
Exercising while pregnant can be difficult and worrying to many mums to be. Our Pregnancy Pilates classes are run by trained physiotherapists where each person has a program tailored to suit their needs and stage of pregnancy with a primary focus on keeping mum and bub safe.
Pregnancy Pilates at Chevron Island Physio is an equipment based class using reformers and Cadillac tables as well as various props such as balls, bands and fitness circles. These classes help expecting mothers in their first, second and third trimesters to develop awareness of their pelvic floor and strengthen and support their lower back while keeping fit and healthy. Classes are kept small with each person being instructed with their own program according to their needs.
Some of the benefits of Pilates during pregnancy include: Improves or maintains physical fitness, reduces risk of gestational diabetes, psychologic wellbeing, and helps with weight management. In addition to the above benefits, exercise in pregnancy has also been linked to: Shorter, easier and less complicated labors, decreased length of hospital stay and a reduced caesarean section rate by 25%, an improved placental quality and higher apgar scores (a method to quickly summarize the health of a newborn).
Patients will need clearance from their Doctor prior to commencing these classes. An initial introductory session with one of our Physiotherapists is required to do a full assessment prior to commencement of the class. An Initial Pilates Consultation with a Physiotherapist will comprise of a comprehensive examination including an ultrasound of the pelvic floor, enabling us to see the extent to which the pelvic floor is activating (or not activating!).
